Attic Insulation & Air Sealing for Old and New Homes

Attic insulation and air sealing is the biggest single upgrade for most Lawrence homes. Warm air escapes into the attic in winter through gaps around chimneys, plumbing, lights, fans and the hatch, and in older homes, straight up the open tops of balloon-frame walls. In summer the path reverses and hot attic air leaks down. Adding insulation without sealing those paths leaves most of the problem.

Seal

We close bypasses with foam and sealant, use fire-rated materials at chimneys and flues, and block the open tops of balloon-frame wall cavities.

Baffle

Vent chutes at the soffits keep insulation from blocking intake air.

Insulate

Lawrence's 2018 IECC table lists R-49 for ceilings in zone 4; ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an empty attic and R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches. Blown cellulose or fiberglass is the usual way to get there.

Rebates

Evergy's Kansas chart lists $0.04 per square foot for air sealing up to $300 and $0.15 per square foot for R-38 ceiling insulation up to $500, for eligible customers.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

Why seal before insulating?

Insulation slows heat but not air. Sealing stops the air that carries most of the heat.

What is balloon framing?

Older framing where wall studs run from the foundation to the roof, leaving cavities open between floors.

Can you blow over vermiculite?

No. Vermiculite should be tested first and removed by an abatement contractor if it contains asbestos.

How long does an attic take?

Most take a day.
